Ultra-Low-Cost Wind Power

Back to Electricity

The total wind energy resource available globally is vast, able to power the world many times over with carbon-free electricity. Technological innovation and growing market scale have made today’s wind power technology more than 99% cheaper than it was in 1980, enabling successful large-scale deployment of wind power around the world to the point that wind power currently provides more than 2% of the world’s electricity. Continuous technology innovation and increasing scale in today’s wind power technology will continue to gradually lower costs and enable significant continued growth in both onshore and shallow offshore wind power development. However, the development of transformational new ultra-low cost wind power technologies will be required to drive more rapid cost reductions below current levels and to unlock the vast wind resources that exist at higher altitudes and in the deep offshore environment.
