Low-GHG Water-Borne-Goods Transportation

Back to Transportation

Water-borne freight shipping accounts today for 1.6% of global greenhouse gas emissions, representing 11% of global emissions from the transportation sector. Significant opportunities exist for major emissions reductions in the water-borne shipping sector through the development and deployment of advanced technologies, including dramatically more efficient engine and transmission technologies, nuclear powered propulsion, the harnessing of wind power for propulsion, improved aerodynamics and hydrodynamics of the hull structure, the development and usage of low greenhouse gas footprint liquid fuels, optimized routing and logistics, and other advanced technology areas.
