Low-GHG Industrial Thermal Processing

Back to Manufacturing

Industrial process heating consumes a very large fraction of the total energy used across the whole industrial sector, with industrial process heating accounting for ~70% of energy end use in the manufacturing sector in the United States. There is significant opportunity to develop new technologies that will replace today’s direct thermal processing technologies that are currently powered by fossil fuels. Promising opportunities in this area include CO2 capture and storage, the development of new high temperature heat pump technologies that can efficiently provide high temperature heat from low-carbon electricity, and other emerging technology pathways.
