Extreme Efficiency in IT/Data Centers

Back to Manufacturing

Data centers represent a significant and rapidly growing source of global emissions: by 2020, emissions from the sector are projected to reach more than 320 metric tons CO2-equivalentper year, more than quadruple what they were in 2007. Opportunities for emissions reductions exist through the development of more efficient power electronic conversion and data center cooling technologies, in addition to technologies that increase server utilization rates above today’s 5–10% range (e.g., virtualization) and that allow for next generation semiconductor chips that use much less energy.
