Industry is often overlooked as a source of greenhouse gases, but simply creating the things we use every day puts an enormous strain on the climate—about 30% of emissions comes from industry. Nearly every piece of plastic, paper, cement, and steel in our world is produced by a process that emits greenhouse gases, many of which are far more potent than carbon. Eliminating emissions from the industrial sector will help put the planet on a truly sustainable path.
Many of the technical questions we’ve identified as potentially valuable have to do with inventing new kinds of materials, many with figuring out ways to make materials that already exist without emitting greenhouse gasses. Still others involve finding better ways to recycle material so that it can be used longer.
