Nuclear power is already a significant global source of baseload carbon-free electricity, providing about 10% of the world’s electricity. However, challenges associated with high costs, long construction times, safety, waste storage, and nuclear proliferation risks have slowed or stalled the growth of nuclear power in many parts of the world in recent years. There is a tremendous opportunity to expand the use of nuclear power in the decades ahead by developing a new generation of advanced nuclear fission power technologies that are intrinsically safe and weapons proliferation resistant, while achieving lower costs, faster construction times, and producing less nuclear waste.
